The Fess System Company was founded in 1903 by the inventor of the oil burner, M.A. Fessler, in California. It moved east in 1915 with offices in Boston and Providence. Fess Company installed the first oil burner in Boston in 1915 and began purchasing heating oil in 1916. Fess became part of Petro (Petroleum Heat & Power Co.) in the 1920s and changed hands several times; in the 1960s the company was sold to Signal Oil and Gas and then became a subsidiary of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco. In the 1980s, through a series of acquisitions, Petro became the largest heating oil company in the United States. It was acquired by Star Gas Partners in 1999.
