The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company, commonly known as C&P Telephone, was founded in Washington DC in 1883. It eventually serviced Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia in addition to the DC area. Through various divisions and mergers, the company later became known as Bell Atlantic, and then Verizon.
